The European Union has reaffirmed its unwavering support for the International Criminal Court (ICC) following the US sanctions on four judges. The US claims the judges took “illegitimate and baseless actions” against the country and its allies, but the EU sees this as a threat to judicial independence and justice.
In a statement, Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission chief, described the ICC as “a cornerstone of international justice” that must be free to act without pressure. The EU’s backing for the court comes after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced sanctions on the judges, who include one from Slovenia.
The sanctions mean the judges are now subject to restrictions, including having their assets blocked and being added to a list of specially designated sanctioned individuals. This makes it difficult for them to access bank accounts or transfer money worldwide.
Critics, including UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk, have expressed concern that such actions run counter to respect for the rule of law and equal protection under the law. Antonio Costa, president of the European Council, has also called for the sanctions to be withdrawn, citing the importance of protecting judicial independence and integrity.
The US has issued similar restrictions against ICC officials since Trump’s return to office in January 2025. The move is seen as an attempt to deter witnesses from coming forward with evidence in ICC investigations, which critics warn could pervert the course of justice.
