The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) recently released data on new car registrations for May 2025. The latest numbers show a 0.6% decrease in overall registrations compared to the same period last year, while year-on-year registrations for May increased by 1.6%. However, the battery-electric car market share remains low at 15.4%.
Hybrid-electric models continue to dominate the market, accounting for 35.1% of total EU registrations, with petrol and diesel cars experiencing a decline in popularity. Petrol car registrations dropped by 20.2%, while diesel car registrations decreased by 26.6%. The combined market share of petrol and diesel cars fell to 38.1%.
Electric cars also saw growth, with new battery-electric car sales reaching 701,089 units in the first five months of 2025. However, only three of the four largest markets in the EU experienced gains, while France saw a decline of 7.1%. Plug-in-hybrid electric cars represented 8.2% of total car registrations, with increases in volume for key markets such as Germany and Spain.
The data also showed a rise in hybrid-electric and battery-electric cars year-over-year, with increases of 25% and 16%, respectively. The EU auto industry continues to play a significant role in the economy, generating over 7.5% of EU GDP and €72.8 billion in R&D spending annually.
The ACEA represents 16 major Europe-based car manufacturers and is a key voice for the automotive sector in Europe.
