A coalition of 30 countries, led by Britain, has pushed ahead with plans to deploy troops to Ukraine despite doubts about US support. The UK’s defense minister, John Healey, emphasized the need for the coalition to be prepared for a peace agreement with Russia, saying “we must be ready for when that peace comes.” However, without US backing, the success of the operation hangs in the balance.
Ukrainian officials and military analysts predict Russian forces will launch a fresh military offensive in Ukraine soon. The EU coalition’s plans hinge on US airpower or other military assistance, but the Trump administration has not made any public commitment to provide support.
European countries have expressed their reliance on US engagement for success in Ukraine. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said American support was “very important,” while Finnish Defense Minister Annit Häkkänen described the US as a “crucial player” in guaranteeing lasting security in Ukraine.
The EU coalition’s make-up and operations will depend on the nature of any peace agreement. The force is unlikely to be stationed at Ukraine’s border with Russia, but rather located further from the ceasefire line, ready to counter any Russian attack.
Building a credible deterrent requires significant efforts from countries rebuilding their militaries after the Cold War. UK officials have discussed deploying 10,000 to 30,000 troops. However, some countries are hesitant to contribute personnel without US support, due to differences in military capabilities and operational planning.
The EU coalition’s uncertainty highlights the challenges of taking responsibility for regional security without a clear commitment from major powers like the US. The issue will be further discussed at an upcoming NATO meeting on Friday, where representatives from 50 nations will gather to drum up military support for Ukraine.
