Hungary has issued a threat to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine amid escalating tensions over damage to the Druzhba pipeline in Russia. The threat comes after a Ukrainian drone strike damaged a key distribution station, temporarily halting oil flows to Hungary and Slovakia.
Ukraine responded by launching two strikes on Russian pipelines, targeting an oil pumping station in the Tambov region. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has condemned the attacks as “outrageous” and “unacceptable,” accusing Ukraine of trying to drag Hungary into the war.
The European Commission is also involved, stating that they are in contact with Hungary and Slovakia over the matter. The commission emphasized the importance of maintaining energy security, but did not specify who attacked the pipeline.
Tensions between EU countries have risen as Hungary and Slovakia rely heavily on Russian pipeline oil. Ukraine imports a significant portion of its electricity and natural gas from Hungary, which has left some questioning the bloc’s response to the situation.
The diplomatic row highlights the ongoing tensions in Eastern Europe, where Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to cause widespread disruption. As the conflict escalates, EU countries are facing growing pressure to balance their interests with their commitment to maintaining regional stability.
