The European Commission has launched a crackdown on Chinese online marketplaces Temu and fast-fashion retailer Shein over the sale of unsafe and dangerous products on their platforms. The move aims to curb cheap, low-value imports that pose unfair competition to EU sellers and harm the environment.
Last year, 4.6 billion low-value items worth less than €22 were imported into the EU, equivalent to 12 million parcels per day. Shein and Temu are among the companies affected by these cheap imports, which are often shipped duty-free to the US.
The Commission has proposed a new measure called “product safety sweep” that will use e-surveillance tools to check products for safety before they are shipped. The EU executive also plans to propose handling fees for e-commerce imports to meet the cost of supervising such imports.
Shein and Temu have both agreed to engage with consumer agencies and the Commission to address concerns over product safety. However, Temu has not yet responded to a request for comment on the issue.
