EU Enacts First Measures of AI Act on February 2

The European Union has started implementing its first measures of the Artificial Intelligence Act, which bans certain prohibited uses of artificial intelligence as of Sunday, February 2.

The new regulations target social rating software, individual predictive policing AI aimed at profiling people by estimating their propensity to commit offenses, and emotion recognition at work or school. These actions are deemed unacceptable due to potential manipulation, exploitation of vulnerabilities, or subliminal techniques.

Additionally, the ban includes real-time facial recognition in public spaces and biometric categorization to deduce personal characteristics such as race, politics, religion, sexual orientation, or trade union membership. However, law enforcement exceptions have been made for these specific applications.

The European Commission has published a list on its website detailing the prohibited uses, highlighting the need for greater regulation of AI use in Europe. The move comes ahead of the upcoming Summit for Action on Artificial Intelligence in Paris, where global leaders will discuss the future of AI development and governance.
