EU Fears Post-American Era Amid Trump’s Hostile Moves

European leaders are grappling with the reality of a potential post-American era on the continent as President Trump’s actions in Ukraine have created tension and uncertainty. The Trump administration’s plan to negotiate a peace settlement with Russia, without involving European allies or Ukrainian officials, has left many questioning America’s commitment to its trans-Atlantic partners.

In response, Europe is preparing for what could be a “go-it-alone” era, with leaders affirming the need for increased military spending and deploying troops to Ukraine as peacekeepers. The possibility of tens of thousands of troops being deployed has raised concerns about public support and domestic political liabilities.

French President Emmanuel Macron has been weakened by his decision to meet with far-right parties, while German intelligence agencies classify these groups as extremist organizations. Mr Trump’s threat to hit the European Union with sweeping tariffs could further damage economies, making it harder for leaders to increase defense spending.

European analysts argue that the US approach is contradictory, signaling both support for Ukraine’s war goals and a willingness to negotiate an outcome without their input or financial burden. This assumption has been met with skepticism, as many point to past failures in nuclear diplomacy with North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, where concessions were made without reciprocal gestures.

The odds against a quick breakthrough on the Ukraine peace deal are high, leaving leaders hesitant to commit troops, at least for now. European leaders must navigate this complex landscape, balancing their desire for stability and security with the need for American support in the face of rising tensions.
