European capitals are gripped with concern that Russian President Vladimir Putin will divide the transatlantic alliance by imposing his maximalist demands on Ukraine. Ahead of a summit between Putin and US President Donald Trump, a European diplomat expressed fears that Europe could be “a footnote in history” if the situation is not addressed.
Putin has given no details about his proposals to halt fighting in Ukraine, leaving Europeans with zero indication that he has shifted an inch from his previous demands. The Kremlin’s maximalist demands include Ukrainian forces withdrawing from parts of the Donetsk region and Russia gaining control over two other regions.
The EU and its member states have expressed commitment to maintaining international borders and are seeking robust security guarantees for Ukraine. However, experience suggests that European efforts may be futile in convincing Trump administration to take a firm stance on the issue.
European leaders are also concerned about the potential for future Russian aggression if Ukrainian territory is ceded. The parallels with the Munich Agreement of 1938 are striking, highlighting the dangers of appeasement and the need for a strong alliance.
The situation remains uncertain, with unclear questions over whether Putin will demand Ukraine recognize Moscow’s sovereignty over Crimea or whether he would accept a freeze along the current frontlines in certain regions.
