The European Space Agency (ESA) has confirmed two contracts to support the development of the EU’s secure communication satellites system, known as IRIS2. The €10.6 billion project aims to create a constellation of around 300 satellites in low Earth orbit and medium Earth orbit, providing resilient, secure, and fast communications for EU governments, companies, and citizens.
The IRIS2 constellation will enable secure and quick communication, ensuring uninterrupted access to government services and high-end commercial services. It will also promote European autonomy, resilience, and competitiveness, aligning with the EU’s strategic goals.
ESA has partnered with an industrial consortium called SpaceRISE, led by satellite operators SES, Eutelsat, and Hispasat. The consortium includes satellite manufacturers and small and medium-sized enterprises. The 12-year concession contract will see ESA monitoring development and validation activities performed by the industrial consortium.
The project’s total cost is €10.6 billion, with funding split between the EU (€6 billion), ESA (€550 million), and private sector companies (over €4 billion). The first launch for IRIS2 is expected in 2029.
ESA Director-General Josef Aschbacher emphasized the importance of resilient communication systems, stating that they are essential in an increasingly complex geopolitical world. He also highlighted ESA’s role in fostering innovation and boosting European competitiveness.
The project marks a significant milestone for European space, with satellite operators SES, Eutelsat, and Hispasat emphasizing their commitment to providing secure communications for the EU.
