European leaders have issued a statement supporting a trilateral meeting between US President Trump, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, and themselves, with “ironclad security guarantees” for Ukraine’s territory. The statement was released after Trump met with Russian President Putin in Alaska.
The EU leaders, including French President Macron, Italian Prime Minister Meloni, German Chancellor Merz, and British Prime Minister Starmer, among others, said they are ready to work together towards a trilateral summit. However, they stressed that Ukraine must make decisions on its own territory and that international borders should not be changed by force.
The EU leaders also welcomed Trump’s efforts to stop the killing in Ukraine and end Russia’s war of aggression, but insisted on “no limitations” for Ukraine’s armed forces. They reiterated their pledge to impose sanctions on Russia as long as the killing continues.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy echoed the statement, calling for “real peace” and not just a pause between Russian invasions. He also urged strengthened sanctions if there is no trilateral meeting or if Russia tries to evade an honest end to the war.
European leaders have expressed concerns over Putin’s intentions, with Norwegian Foreign Minister Eide labeling his talking points as “code for the Russian justification for the illegal invasion of Ukraine.” Czech Prime Minister Fiala described Putin as still seeking the greatest possible territorial gains and the restoration of the Soviet empire.
