German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron are prepared to work with the Syrian rebel group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) on certain conditions, a German government statement revealed after a phone call between the two leaders. The EU leaders welcomed the departure of Assad, who caused “terrible suffering” to the Syrian people.
The statement came as governments worldwide seek to establish new ties with HTS, a group formerly linked to Al Qaeda. Scholz and Macron agreed to support an inclusive political process in Syria and strengthen EU engagement in the country. They will discuss the way forward with partners in the Middle East in close coordination.
