European leaders have visited Moldova to demonstrate support for the country’s European Union (EU) accession and warn of Russia’s efforts to undermine that ambition. The visit comes ahead of critical parliamentary elections, where pro-Russian elements could gain ground.
Moldova celebrated 34 years of independence from Moscow on Wednesday, with EU leaders flanking President Maia Sandu as she addressed her nation. Sandu emphasized that EU membership is “not a distant dream, but a project we are working on,” vital for security guarantees.
The president’s comments echo concerns over Russia’s actions in Ukraine, where the country has been embroiled in a full-scale invasion since February 2022. Moldova has been a strong supporter of Ukraine, and EU leaders expressed solidarity with their efforts to end the war.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that Russia is trying “relentlessly” to undermine freedom and prosperity in Moldova. In contrast, President Emmanuel Macron described EU membership as the “clear and sovereign choice” of Moldova, conveying a message of solidarity and confidence.
The visit highlights the EU’s commitment to supporting Moldova’s path to EU membership. However, polls suggest that Sandu’s party, PAS, may lose seats in parliament, prompting concerns about the country’s future trajectory. With formal accession talks underway, the European leaders’ visit underscores their determination to make Moldova’s EU membership “irreversible.”
