European leaders have strongly condemned Hamas for releasing footage of Israeli captives Rom Braslavski and Evyatar David, who were taken hostage nearly 670 days ago. French President Emmanuel Macron described the state as a “depiction of Hamas’ unlimited inhumanity” and called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the return of all hostages, and full aid resumption.
Macron reiterated his support for Palestinian statehood and stated that ending the conflict is not enough; instead, he demands a political solution. He also made it clear that Hamas must be demilitarized, excluded from governance, and recognize Israel.
Other Western nations, including the UK, Canada, and Germany, have followed Macron’s lead in condemning Hamas’ actions. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed Macron’s comments, saying Hamas should no longer play a role in Gaza’s future. The US is reportedly pushing for a comprehensive deal that includes a complete ceasefire and hostage return.
The footage of the two hostages coincided with a visit by White House envoy Steve Witkoff to Israel last week, where he met with leaders and the families of the hostages. While the US believes a deal is close to being secured, its efforts have been met with skepticism so far.
