European leaders have reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky after a tense meeting with US President Donald Trump. The UK, France, and other European nations are proposing a limited one-month ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia, but Kyiv has raised concerns about security guarantees.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Europe is ready to form a “coalition of the willing” to defend Ukraine, with Britain and France leading the charge. However, it remains unclear which other nations will join the plan. The US has been criticized for not providing enough support, prompting Starmer to say that “Europe must do the heavy lifting.”
The EU leaders agreed to continue providing Ukraine with substantial military aid, including air defense missiles and jobs in Northern Ireland. While some countries have ruled out deploying troops to Ukraine, others are ready to contribute to the country’s security.
Starmer emphasized the need for a robust deal, pointing to the 2014 Minsk agreements, which were abandoned by Russia after just days of negotiations. He warned that “we must not repeat the mistakes of the past” and stressed the importance of talks being held without Ukraine.
The meeting marks a significant show of European unity in support of Ukraine, but it remains to be seen whether other nations will fully commit to the plan.
