EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas called on member states to increase defense spending, urging them to “wake up” to the importance of national security. She emphasized that Europe’s failure to invest in military capabilities sends a dangerous signal to potential aggressors and warned against weakness in the face of threats.
Kallas, responding to U.S. President Donald Trump’s push for NATO member states to allocate more resources to defense spending, stated that the EU is “right” to demand increased spending. She highlighted the bloc’s commitment to shoulder responsibility for Europe’s security and stressed the need for a mutually beneficial relationship with the UK.
In an address to EU lawmakers, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk argued in favor of a 5% GDP defense spending target, aligning with Trump’s demand. However, Scholz emphasized that such a figure might be costly for some countries.
The topic is expected to remain a key focus during Trump’s second term, as the U.S. president previously suggested encouraging Russia to attack delinquent NATO members.
