EU Mandates Apple to Open Up iPhone Tech to Competitors

The European Union has outlined the steps that Apple must take to open up its iPhone operating system, allowing it to work better with competing technologies. The Digital Markets Act, a wide-ranging set of regulations, aims to prevent “Big Tech” companies from dominating markets.

Under the new rules, Apple must provide device and app makers with access to nine key features, including improved notification support for non-Apple smartwatches and seamless pairing with wireless headphones from other brands. Third-party developers will also gain better access to technical documentation and software development tools.

The EU executive Commission stated that the measures will bring “regulatory certainty” and improve interoperability, benefiting consumers in the market for innovative connected devices. European consumer group BEUC hailed the decision, saying Apple’s walled garden had prevented interoperability.

However, Apple expressed unhappiness with the rules, citing concerns about slowing innovation and giving away new features to competitors. The company will continue to work with the EU on its concerns.

The Digital Markets Act also criticizes Google for not complying fully with the regulations. Despite changes, including removing flight listings from search results, Google is still prioritizing its own services in search results and charging excessive fees for digital goods or services.

Google has responded by stating that the findings will require further changes to display some search results, which would make it harder for users to find what they are looking for. The company argues that the regulations create a false choice between openness and security, risking exposure to malware and fraud.

The EU’s crackdown on the tech industry has been met with criticism from President Donald Trump and Vice-President JD Vance, who have expressed concerns about excessive AI regulation.
