EU Must Strengthen Support for Ukraine Amid Rising Tensions

The European Union’s solidarity with Ukraine is being tested like never before. As the war rages on and Vladimir Putin’s aggression escalates, the bloc must take decisive action to support its eastern neighbor. The situation has become dire, with Ukraine facing a €70 billion funding shortfall next year to defend itself against Russia’s relentless attacks.

The EU’s inaction so far is alarming, especially given Donald Trump’s refusal to provide military aid to Ukraine. This lack of support could embolden Putin and undermine the resolve of European allies. The threat of a disastrous cash crunch by spring threatens to cripple Ukraine’s ability to resist and negotiate an acceptable peace.

Ursula von der Leyen’s warning that “perfect or simple solutions do not exist” is a stark reminder that time is running out. EU leaders must put aside their differences and agree on a concrete plan to support Ukraine, including a €140 billion “reparations loan” underwritten by frozen Russian assets.

The sabotage of Poland’s rail network is just one example of how far Putin will go to disrupt European security. The EU’s inaction could embolden him further, leading to a catastrophic situation that would undermine the bloc’s very existence.

Ukraine needs the EU’s support now more than ever. Kyiv’s lobbying efforts must be bolstered by concrete actions from Brussels. The clock is ticking, and the fate of Ukraine and Europe hangs in the balance. It’s time for the EU to take decisive action and disabuse Putin of his delusions that he can outlast both Ukraine and the EU.
