The European Union has identified seven countries it considers safe, aiming to fast-track asylum applications from those nations. The countries include Kosovo, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Morocco, and Tunisia. Citizens from these countries will have their claims reviewed within three months if deemed likely to fail.
EU officials plan to create a dynamic list that can be expanded or modified as needed. Countries on the list may be removed if they’re no longer seen as safe. This move aims to reform asylum rules and speed up processing, particularly for those involved in previous influxes of irregular migrants.
Italy has welcomed this development, hoping it will deter asylum seekers from targeting countries with looser regulations. However, human rights groups have expressed concerns about labeling these countries as safe, citing documented rights abuses and limited protections. The new proposals must be approved by the European Parliament and EU member states before implementation.
