EU Opens Formal Proceedings Against TikTok Over Election Interference

The European Commission has launched formal proceedings against TikTok, citing concerns over its failure to limit election interference in Romania’s recent presidential vote. The Commission will investigate TikTok’s policy on political advertisements and paid-for content, as well as its recommendation systems for potential manipulation. This move follows a December order for TikTok to freeze data linked to the Romanian election under the EU’s Digital Services Act. A similar probe is also underway for Germany’s parliamentary election in February, highlighting growing concerns over foreign interference in European democratic processes.
