EU Pledges $6.3bn to Help Rebuild War-Torn Syria

The European Union has pledged more than $6 billion in aid to help rebuild war-torn Syria, following a donor drive conference in Brussels. Western powers and regional neighbors attended the meeting, chaired by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

The conference aims to support Syria’s transition after the ousting of former leader Bashar al-Assad. The EU reported that donors pledged 5.8 billion euros ($6.3bn) in aid, with grants accounting for 4.2 billion euros and loans 1.6 billion dollars.

The EU itself has vowed to provide 2.5 billion euros ($2.7bn) in aid to Syria. Germany will provide an additional 328 million euros, while the UK pledged up to 208 million pounds in humanitarian aid. The funds will support Syrians’ access to critical services such as water, food, healthcare, and education.

Syria’s new leadership is attempting to consolidate control over territory devastated for more than a decade. However, recent clashes between gunmen from the Alawite minority sect and security patrols have raised concerns about the country’s stability. The EU’s aid pledge aims to help stabilize the situation and support a peaceful transition in Syria.
