EU Pledges Billions to Ukraine Amidst Russia’s Invasion Anniversary

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a €3.5 billion aid package for Ukraine on its third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. The pledge includes an early disbursement in March and increased measures for energy security.

Ukraine received financial support from Canada, Spain, Norway, Finland, and other countries totaling €10 billion. Western leaders demonstrated solidarity with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a gathering in Kiev.

Russia controls around 20% of Ukraine’s territory, including the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea. The EU adopted a new sanctions package against Russia while UK sanctions have been extended.

A recent drone strike damaged an oil refinery in Russia’s Ryazan region, causing a fire. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised its friendship with China during a telephone conversation.
