The European Commission is working on a proposal to reduce the bloc’s dependence on Russian oil and gas imports, following criticism from US President Donald Trump. The plan aims to phase out Russian fossil fuels from the European energy market.
The proposal may include increasing US natural gas imports, as suggested by EU Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen in the past. Currently, the EU relies on the US for about half of its liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Trump has argued that Europe should make up for the US trade deficit by purchasing more US fuel supplies. He stated that “they’re going to have to buy their energy from us” due to the need for it.
The proposal faces challenges, including Hungary’s threat to block gas sanctions, which require unanimous approval from the 27-member bloc. EU officials are working to find a solution that balances energy security with climate goals, particularly under the net-zero emissions target set by 2050.
