EU Unites Against Trump Tariffs, Sets Stage for Countermeasures

The European Union is set to present a united front against US President Donald Trump’s tariffs, with a proposal expected Monday and a vote on Wednesday. The bloc faces 25% import tariffs on steel and aluminium, as well as 20% “reciprocal” tariffs on almost all other goods. In response, the EU plans to impose countermeasures worth up to $28 billion, targeting products such as US meat, cereals, wine, and clothing.

The move comes after talks with Washington have failed to yield results, with EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic describing US tariffs as “damaging and unjustified”. The European Commission has proposed a list of US products to hit with extra duties, which is set to be put to a vote on Wednesday. If approved, the countermeasures would enter force in two stages, starting April 15.

EU diplomats say the main aim is to negotiate with Washington for the removal of tariffs, but to be prepared to respond with countermeasures if that fails. However, there are differing opinions within the bloc on how to respond, with some member states calling for a more measured approach. The EU’s unity in this matter is seen as crucial in keeping pressure on Trump to enter negotiations.

The initial counter-tariffs would cover products worth an estimated $28 billion, including copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and timber. The move could have significant implications for global trade and economies, with billions of consumers potentially facing higher prices due to the escalation of a potential trade war.
