EU Urged to Condemn Israel’s ‘Crimes Against Humanity’

European Union officials meeting with Israeli representatives are being urged by Human Rights Watch (HRW) to condemn “crimes against humanity” in the occupied West Bank. The call comes after reports of widespread violence, displacement, and human rights abuses against Palestinians.

Tanks have been deployed to the occupied West Bank for the first time in over 20 years, with thousands of Palestinians fleeing as Israeli forces continue their assault on refugee camps. Israel has also restricted internet access in Gaza six times in 2024, according to a new report by Access Now.

The restrictions coincide with numerous documented atrocities and war crimes, including mass displacement, military targeting of shelters and hospitals, cutting off humanitarian aid, and constant bombardments of civilians. Human rights groups have accused Israel of committing “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity”.

The situation in Gaza is fragile, with Hamas saying it won’t rejoin ceasefire talks until 620 Palestinians are released by Israel. The Palestinian National Initiative has also warned that the conflict could escalate into a full-scale war.

As senior EU officials meet with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, they must consider the implications of their actions on the situation in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Human Rights Watch is urging them to take concrete steps to condemn Israel’s actions and call for an immediate end to the violence.
