The European Union is standing firm in its commitment to global cooperation despite President Donald Trump’s isolationist stance. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned of a “new era of harsh geostrategic competition” during a speech at the Davos Economic Forum, hinting at the growing tensions between the US and other nations.
In response, the EU has pledged to deepen its collaboration with the US and China, while also reaffirming its participation in major international agreements such as the global climate accord. This stance is seen as a countermeasure to Trump’s threat of retaliation against countries that tax American multinational companies.
To further strengthen its position, the EU may consider joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s multilateral framework, according to Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo. By staying engaged globally, the EU aims to maintain its influence in international affairs and counterbalance what it perceives as US isolationism.
