Eugene, Oregon city manager Sarah Medary outlined the terms for ending a contract with surveillance technology company Flock Safety after canceling their license-plate reader cameras. The city asked Flock to remove all cameras and associated hardware by December 12, 2025. Despite this request, Flock has not responded.
The city’s decision comes amid concerns over system vulnerabilities and limitations. Eugene Police Department cited these issues in a news release on Friday, citing the need for transparency regarding data access and potential security risks.
Medary emphasized that the termination is not about the technology itself but rather her city’s experience with Flock Safety. She mentioned that other cities have had similar issues and expressed concerns over costs associated with refunding state grants that funded the cameras.
