A deadly and debilitating mosquito-borne disease outbreak is becoming the “new normal” in Europe, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). This year has seen a record 27 outbreaks of chikungunya and the highest number of West Nile Virus cases in three years.
Chikungunya, which rarely kills but can lead to long-lasting disability, has spread rapidly across France and Italy. In fact, Santé publique France reported unusually early and significant local transmission in France. For the first time, a locally acquired case was found in northeastern France’s Alsace region.
Europe has also seen an increase in West Nile Virus cases, with 335 locally-acquired cases and 19 deaths reported as of August 13. The ECDC expects cases to continue rising through August and into September. Cases have been reported in new areas, including Italy’s provinces of Latina and Frosinone, near Rome.
The ECDC is urging a coordinated response to protect public health. Dr Céline Gossner warned that as mosquito-borne disease landscapes evolve, more people will be at risk in the future. “There is an urgent need to strengthen and scale up efficient, environmentally friendly mosquito control interventions,” she said.
This outbreak highlights the growing threat of mosquito-borne diseases in Europe. As cases continue to rise, it’s essential for individuals and authorities to take prevention measures seriously. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also warned that 2025 may resemble the explosion in cases that began in 2004, with half a million people infected.
