European leaders have differing views on creating a unified army to counter Russian aggression, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky calling for a European force and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski expressing caution.
Zelensky proposed the idea during a speech at the Munich Security Conference, stating that an “army of Europe” is needed. However, Sikorski believes that unifying national armies would not be feasible.
Sikorski advocates for the European Union to develop its own defense capabilities, including EU subsidies for the defense industry and an EU force. He emphasizes Poland’s duty to protect its territory through NATO, but acknowledges a need to expand European militaries to counter Russian aggression.
Ukraine is seeking European support in filling the gap created by waning US military aid.
