Europe Unveils First Clear Images of Sun’s South Pole

For decades, spacecraft and telescopes have studied the sun, but no human or robotic eyes had captured images of its poles until now. On Wednesday, the European Space Agency released the first clear pictures of the sun’s south pole, taken by its Solar Orbiter spacecraft in late March.

This achievement marks a significant milestone in understanding the sun, with Dr. Carole Mundell, director of science for the European Space Agency, calling it “a wonderful achievement.” The images reveal chaotic solar magnetism in the polar region, offering scientists new insights into the sun’s behavior.
