Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for the creation of a European army to bolster the continent’s defenses, warning that Russia is not preparing for dialogue. Zelenskyy claimed Ukraine had intelligence on Russia planning to send troops to Belarus under a guise of training exercises, which he labeled as a “new Russian province” posing a threat to NATO countries.
Zelenskyy emphasized the need for Europe to become self-sufficient and united in its defense. He stated that the US might not support European decisions on security issues, making it essential for Western allies like the US to provide security guarantees. The Ukrainian president noted that Russia’s intentions are “not to make peace,” and therefore, cannot offer credible security guarantees.
Zelenskyy also warned of the dangers of a meeting between US and Russian presidents without Ukraine’s involvement, saying it would be “very dangerous.” However, he reiterated his commitment to joining NATO, despite concerns from some officials that it may not be achievable. The Ukrainian president proposed creating a new NATO-style military defense along the borders of Ukraine, Belarus, Finland, and the Baltic states, which he believes would be the strongest security line for Europe.
