Evan Spiegel Jokes at Meta on Cloning Features

Snap CEO Evan Spiegel has changed his LinkedIn title to jokingly reference Meta’s habit of cloning features from Snapchat. The move comes amid a well-documented rivalry between the two tech giants, with Meta often seen as a fast follower after Snapchat launches a new component that gains popularity.

Spiegel took aim at Mark Zuckerberg’s company by highlighting the similarities between their apps. His LinkedIn bio now states he is “Loving husband, father of four boys, VP Product @ Meta,” likely referencing Meta’s history of releasing features similar to those found on Snapchat.

The rivalry dates back to 2013 when Meta was reportedly interested in acquiring Snap but Spiegel turned down a $3 billion offer. Despite this, Meta continued to develop its own versions of popular features, including Instagram Stories and filters.

Spiegel has previously expressed mixed feelings about Meta’s feature cloning, saying he’d appreciate it if they copied other aspects of the company as well, like data protection practices. However, former Instagram executives have shown little remorse over copying good ideas from others.

The joke may be a nod to Spiegel’s past comments on the tech industry, where he said it’s natural for good ideas to spread across industries. The rivalry between Snap and Meta continues, with both companies pushing the boundaries of innovation.
