EVs to Pay One-Time Fee on US Roadways Under New Bill

Lawmakers have reintroduced a bill aimed at ensuring electric vehicles (EV) contribute to the Highway Trust Fund, which funds road maintenance and improvement projects. The Fair Sharing of Highways and Roads for Electric Vehicles (Fair SHARE) Act proposes a one-time fee for light-duty EVs.

Currently, EVs do not pay into the Highway Trust Fund, while fuel taxes generate most of its funding. Lawmakers argue that it’s unfair that EVs don’t contribute due to their heavier batteries causing more wear on roadways. The bill is endorsed by trucking groups, including the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association and the American Trucking Associations.

These organizations claim that truckers pay multiple taxes supporting the Highway Trust Fund but feel frustrated that EVs receive no funding despite equal access to maintained roads. They commend Senator Deb Fischer and Representative Dusty Johnson for leading the effort to ensure fair sharing of costs. The bill aims to find sustainable revenue sources for the HTF as fuel efficiency rises and alternative fuels gain adoption.
