Oblivion Remastered has achieved impressive numbers on Steam, with over 120,000 concurrent players within hours of release. However, ex-Blizzard president Mike Ybarra is skeptical about the remaster’s ability to hold its own against modern masterpieces like Elden Ring. Ybarra states that while Oblivion was once fantastic, it won’t compare to games that have pushed the boundaries of discovery, class systems, and combat mechanics.
Ybarra’s comments come as Oblivion Remastered offers a visual update with new lighting, character models, and redesigned menus. While this may not be enough to catch up with modern standards, Ybarra notes that Virtuos has made some improvements, such as updating the levelling system inspired by Skyrim. However, he also emphasizes the importance of knowing when to exercise restraint and not change old features.
Oblivion Remastered has shot to the top of Steam’s best sellers list despite its remaster status, which Ybarra acknowledges could have been perceived as lazy. Nevertheless, the game’s popularity proves that nostalgia still holds value in the gaming community.
