Ex-Disney Employee Sentenced to 3 Years for Hacking and Identity Theft

A former Disney World staffer, Michael Scheuer, has been sentenced to three years in prison and fined $700,000 for hacking into the company’s computer system and altering menu allergen warnings. Scheuer, 40, from Florida, was found guilty of knowingly transmitting a program to a protected computer, intentionally causing damage, and aggravated identity theft.

The hack occurred after Scheuer was terminated in June for “misconduct”. He had access to publishing menus for Disney’s entire restaurant portfolio and made changes that could have been deadly to people with specific allergies. However, the affected menu items never reached the restaurants.

Scheuer also modified wine regions on menus to coincide with recent mass shootings locations, added a swastika, and embedded a QR code promoting boycotting Israeli companies. He was ordered to forfeit his computer and pay $687,776 in restitution to the victims of his crimes.
