The wife of South Korea’s jailed former president, Yoon Suk Yeol, Kim Keon Hee, has been arrested on multiple charges including stock manipulation and bribery. The 52-year-old denied all allegations during a court hearing in Seoul, but the court issued a detention warrant due to concerns that she may destroy evidence.
This marks the first time both a former president and his wife have been jailed in South Korea’s history. Yoon was detained in January over a failed martial law bid that led to his ouster last year. Prosecutors claim Kim made over $577,000 through price-rigging schemes involving BMW dealers and received bribes from the Unification Church.
The arrest comes amid controversy surrounding corruption during Yoon’s presidency. He vetoed three opposition-led bills aimed at investigating allegations against Kim. A special counsel was set up in June after Yoon’s rival became president.
