Ex-Ravens Coach Charged with Hacking College Athletes’ Personal Photos and Videos

Matt Weiss, a former Michigan assistant coach, has been charged with over 20 federal crimes for allegedly accessing the personal digital photos and videos of thousands of college athletes. The 14-count indictment includes charges of unauthorized access to computers and aggravated identity theft.

Weiss, who worked at the University of Michigan under coach Jim Harbaugh’s brother, John, was accused of targeting female athletes based on their school affiliation, athletic history, and physical characteristics. He allegedly researched personal information, such as mother’s maiden names, pets, and dates of birth, to guess or reset passwords for the women’s accounts.

The FBI was involved in an investigation into Weiss’ alleged computer access crimes, which led to his termination from Michigan in January 2023. The charges against Weiss are a result of his actions while he was employed by both the Ravens under John Harbaugh and the University of Michigan.

According to federal prosecutors, Weiss accessed over 150,000 athletes’ medical data, downloaded personal intimate photos and videos, and targeted the accounts of over 2,000 students and 1,300 alumni. The indictment states that Weiss’ actions were motivated by his desire to access personal, intimate digital content beyond what was intended for sharing with intimate partners.
