Exercise Boosts Brain Power for Days After

Scientists at University College London have discovered that physical exercise can continue to benefit the brain long after the initial workout is over. A study found that people who engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity experienced improved memory and cognitive function the day after exercising, compared to those who were sedentary.

Researchers analyzed data from participants aged 50-83 who wore activity trackers for eight days and took cognitive tests each day. They found that more moderate or vigorous physical activity was linked to better working memory and episodic memory – the ability to remember events.

In contrast, people who spent more time being sedentary experienced worse working memory on the following day. The study also highlighted the importance of getting enough sleep, particularly deep sleep, which added to the memory improvement.

Experts say that even simple activities like running up stairs can have a significant impact on brain power. Dr Mikaela Bloomberg, lead researcher, stated: “Our findings suggest that physical activity may boost memory benefits for longer than previously thought, possibly lasting into the next day.” The study’s results are promising, but further research is needed to confirm the findings with a larger sample of participants.
