Expert Speaks Out Against CDC’s COVID Vaccine Recommendation for Pregnant Women

A US doctor has criticized the federal government’s decision not to recommend the COVID-19 vaccine for pregnant women, calling it a “tragedy” that puts their lives at risk.

Dr. Linda Eckert of UW Medicine says pregnant women are more likely to develop serious symptoms from COVID-19, including hospitalizations and ICU admissions. She also notes that the vaccine reduces the risk of severe illness in pregnant mothers and protects their newborns by passing on immunity.

Data show that infants vaccinated while in utero are less likely to be hospitalized with COVID-19 within six months of life. However, there is currently no approved vaccine for babies under six months old, despite facing serious complications if infected.

Dr. Eckert fears that the CDC’s recommendation will discourage insurance companies from covering the vaccine, leaving many people unable to afford it out of pocket. This move has sparked criticism from some OB-GYNs who are pushing back against the decision.
