Experts have rejected Elon Musk’s claim that a massive X outage was caused by Ukrainian hackers, calling his explanation “garbage.” The social media platform faced global disruptions on Monday, with over 1.6 million user reports of downtime. Musk alleged the attack originated from Ukrainian IP addresses but provided no evidence.
Ciaran Martin, former head of the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, dismissed Musk’s theory as unconvincing, stating the outage likely resulted from a common DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack—flooding servers with traffic to crash them. He criticized X for poor cybersecurity, noting major companies rarely fail due to such “unsophisticated” methods.
Musk speculated state actors or large groups were involved but did not confirm Ukraine’s role. Cybersecurity experts emphasized hackers often mask their origins by hijacking global devices, making IP tracing unreliable.
Netblocks, a monitoring group, reported patterns consistent with DDoS attacks rather than internal errors. X has faced similar disruptions before, including a 2023 outage by the hacker collective Anonymous Sudan.
Experts warn DDoS attacks are rising globally, targeting businesses with sensitive data. While Musk claims past DDoS incidents affected X, independent verification remains lacking.
