Experts Warn of Growing H5N1 Threat, Call for Global Action

Avian influenza A (H5N1) has emerged as a significant concern in recent months due to its rapid spread, particularly in the US. The Pandemic Action Network (PAN) began tracking the situation in early 2024 and reviewed the past year’s data to assess the growing threat.

The H5N1 virus initially spread from birds to other species, including dairy cows, before reaching humans. A review of media coverage and policy action reveals a lack of preparedness for a potential pandemic.

Experts emphasize the need for immediate efforts to strengthen surveillance, expand testing, and implement targeted vaccination campaigns. Countries, especially those most affected like the US, must take decisive action now.

PAN urges global leaders to take prompt action to prepare for and respond to the H5N1 outbreak. Key recommendations include increasing transparency and data sharing, bolstering surveillance and testing, enhancing access to medical countermeasures, strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration, and promoting multilateral cooperation.
