Exploring Pluto’s Legacy at Lowell Observatory Festival

The I Heart Pluto Festival in Flagstaff, Arizona, celebrated 95 years since Clyde Tombaugh’s discovery of the dwarf planet Pluto. The event honored Tombaugh’s achievement and featured a panel discussion with renowned astronomers and space enthusiasts, including Alan Stern and David Levy. Adam Nimoy, son of Leonard Nimoy, joined the panel to share insights into his father’s career and legacy.

The festival also included various events, such as the dedication of a new beer at Mother Road Brewery, an Astronomy on Tap quiz competition, and a Pluto pub crawl. The main event took place at Lowell Observatory’s new Astronomy Discovery Center, where more than 1,500 visitors attended the Night of Discovery reception. This was followed by a book signing with Nimoy.

Other events included an interview discussion between KNAU science reporter Melissa Sevigny and Adam Nimoy, as well as a screening of the film For the Love of Spock, produced by Leonard Nimoy. The festival showcased the excitement surrounding Pluto’s discovery and the enduring legacy of Clyde Tombaugh. Attendees were treated to engaging discussions, fascinating insights, and unique experiences that left a lasting impression.
