ExxonMobil Plans Massive Gas-Fired Power Plant for Data Centers

ExxonMobil is designing a massive natural gas-fired power plant to produce electricity for data centers. The facility, which could have generating capacity of over 1,500 MW, would capture more than 90% of its emissions using carbon capture technology. This move comes as the company seeks to support the growing demand for energy-intensive data centers.

The project is driven by market demand, offering a low-carbon solution with an accelerated timeline and grid connection challenges avoided. Exxon expects to increase its oil and gas production by 18% from current levels by 2030, while investing $30 billion in alternative energy resources and emission reduction over the next few years.

This venture aligns with Exxon’s efforts to develop new technologies for data centers, including a liquid cooling system partnership with Intel. The companies aim to design and co-develop energy-efficient cooling solutions that support systems built on Intel’s x86 architecture. This initiative could help data center operators reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.

Exxon has secured land for the facility and is in talks with potential buyers. While details about the project, including cost and location, remain scarce, the company anticipates having the plant operational within five years.
