The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved license modifications for the SpaceX Starship Flight 9 mission, but did not immediately allow it to fly. The approval comes after a rocket exploded in space during a test launch on March 8.
SpaceX will need to wait until the FAA completes its investigation into the incident or makes a determination that it is safe to resume flight operations. The investigation was prompted by concerns over air traffic control and safety issues, as well as the potential impact of space debris.
The FAA has also increased the number of launches allowed at Boca Chica, Texas, from five to 25, in an effort to support SpaceX’s plans for reusable rocket technology. However, both of these developments come with conditions that must be met before Starship Flight 9 can proceed.
In addition, the FAA will expand aircraft and maritime hazard areas around the US and other countries to minimize the risk of collisions between space objects and aircraft. This measure aims to mitigate concerns over air traffic control and safety issues raised by the March explosion.
The approval has been met with skepticism from some quarters, who argue that it comes too soon after a major setback for SpaceX’s Mars mission ambitions. Despite this, the FAA has emphasized its commitment to ensuring public safety while also supporting innovative private companies like SpaceX.
