The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reduced flight capacity at Newark Liberty International Airport through the end of 2025 due to ongoing construction and staffing shortages. Starting September 1, only 28 arriving and departing flights will be allowed each hour on weekends, while 34 arrivals and departures will be permitted during other times.
The FAA aims to maintain safety while alleviating excessive flight delays caused by equipment challenges and staffing issues. The airport’s runway closure earlier this year has also contributed to the reduced operation. Runway 4L-22R reopened 13 days ahead of schedule, allowing for the resumption of more flights.
Newark Airport has faced numerous disruptions this year, including air traffic controller shortages, technology glitches, and other issues. United Airlines, which operates 75% of the airport’s flights, has been accused of contributing to overcrowding, but its CEO has vowed to make travel at Newark “the cheapest” for passengers this summer.
The FAA is taking steps to improve the situation, including updating antiquated technology and enhancing communication connections. These efforts aim to reduce delays and enhance safety at the airport.
