The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued an urgent safety warning about fake Labubu dolls, also known as Lafufus, that can pose a serious risk of choking and death to young children. The fakes are sold both as dolls and small keychains and can fit in a child’s mouth, blocking their airway.
Some knockoffs are poorly made, breaking into small pieces that children could ingest. The CPSC warned consumers not to buy the fakes and to stop using any of the faux dolls they own immediately.
Labubus, which retail for under $30 through Chinese seller Pop Mart, have inspired numerous knockoff versions that can fetch thousands online. To identify a real Labubu, look for a holographic sticker, scannable QR code, discrete UV stamp on one foot, and nine teeth – authentic dolls have this feature, while fakes may vary.
Parents are advised to buy only from reputable sellers and protect their children from these hazardous toys. The CPSC emphasized that no parent should worry about the safety of a toy, as fake Labubu dolls are “dangerous, illegal, and have no place in American homes.”
