Falcons Ditch Kirk Cousins as Starting QB for Michael Penix Jr.

The Atlanta Falcons have made a surprise move, benching quarterback Kirk Cousins in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. Cousins will no longer be the team’s starting quarterback moving forward. The decision comes after five games where Cousins threw nine interceptions and only one touchdown pass, leading to a 1-4 stretch that dropped the team from first place in the NFC South to a 7-7 record.

Cousins, who has thrown a league-leading 16 picks, maintains his confidence in his abilities, saying he “didn’t forget how to play quarterback.” However, it’s unlikely Cousins will be the team’s No. 1 guy again. Penix, who was taken at No. 8 overall in the NFL draft, will get the ball this Sunday against the New York Giants.

For the remainder of the season, Cousins has pledged his support to Penix and the team. However, after that, his future with the Falcons is uncertain. With a no-trade clause, Cousins will have a say in his future, but the decisions will be financially driven. The Falcons may cut him or trade him if he gives the green light.

Cousins’ contract, which includes $180 million and $100 million guaranteed, makes it a high-risk move for the team. If they cut him before March 12, 2025, they’ll face $65 million in dead money. A trade could also be an option, but it would leave them with $37.5 million of remaining proration.

Despite his uncertainty, Cousins remains committed to being a top backup quarterback. He’s worked out with the scout team and says he plans to work hard to prove himself in the remaining weeks. The Falcons’ general manager, Terry Fontenot, will now need to navigate the challenges posed by Cousins’ contract as they move forward without their star quarterback.
