Atlanta’s failure to use a timeout after quarterback Michael Penix, Jr.’s 25-yard completion gave Washington three and out with 1:19 left in regulation ultimately cost the team a playoff spot. Coach Raheem Morris said he should have called a timeout after the completion, but prioritized trying to move up quickly.
The Falcons drove to the Washington 38-yard line before attempting a game-winning field goal, which fell short. In hindsight, calling a timeout could have given them more chances to get closer. “Mastery of clock management wins games,” Morris said. “Failure to make quick decisions in the moment loses games.”
Penix had no complaints about the decision and trusted Coach Morris’s judgment. However, teammates may be wondering if the call cost them their NFC South title bid.
