The Atlanta Falcons have named Jeff Ulbrich their new defensive coordinator for the 2024 season, marking a familiar return for the team’s head coach, Raheem Morris. This is not Ulbrich’s first stint with the Falcons, as he previously served in the same role from 2015 to 2020 under head coach Dan Quinn.
Ulbrich, 47, comes to Atlanta after serving as the interim head coach of the New York Jets. He was let go by the Jets after just one season at the helm, following a 3-9 record. During his time with the Jets, Ulbrich’s defense consistently ranked high in defensive EPA, finishing top five in both 2022 and 2023.
Morris and Ulbrich share a long-standing connection, having worked together on Quinn’s staff from 2015 to 2020. Ulbrich previously played in the NFL as a linebacker for 10 seasons before transitioning into coaching.
The Falcons have been struggling defensively under Jimmy Lake, who was fired earlier this season. The team’s defensive performance has been marred by high quarterback completion rates and low sacks, with 31 sacks in 18 games to date. With Ulbrich at the helm, Morris hopes to restore the team’s defensive footing and improve their chances of success.
