Famine Spreads in War-Torn Sudan

A war between the army and a paramilitary group in Sudan is causing widespread hunger, with a UN-backed report saying that five areas of the country are facing famine. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report outlines severe food shortages for 24.6 million people, half of Sudan’s population.

Famine conditions were confirmed in camps for internally displaced people and residential communities in the Nuba Mountains and other areas. The IPC predicts that another five areas will be affected by May. The report also identifies 17 areas at risk of famine across Sudan.

The war has led to mass displacement, a collapsing economy, and poor humanitarian access. The IPC report highlights the devastating impact of conflict on food production, with hostilities disrupting farming and resulting in abandoned crops.

The international community is calling for an end to the violence to allow people to access basic necessities like food, water, health, nutrition, and agriculture. Sudan’s government has disrupted the IPC’s process, saying that the reports undermine its sovereignty and dignity.
