A fan has been banned from all MLB ballparks after yelling a racist slur about Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte’s late mother during Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago White Sox. The incident occurred while Marte was at bat in the seventh inning, and he became emotional.
Marte’s mother passed away in a car accident in 2017. Team personnel heard the comment and asked the fan to be ejected. The fan later admitted to making an inappropriate remark. MLB has commended the White Sox for taking action immediately.
This is not the first incident of a fan using racist language towards a player this season. In April, a fan was banned from a ballpark after yelling at Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran following his reveal that he had attempted suicide. The White Sox avoided being swept in Wednesday’s series finale with a 7-3 victory, as Marte went hitless with two strikeouts.
